All It Took Was Lots Of Love And A Caring Cat Brother To Bring This Sad Cat To Life

Mami is a cat who has very sad eyes. She was rescued as a kitten from a dumpster in winter, with her mother and siblings. They were taken by a rescue group to have a better life.

Sinead Brooks and her husband Riley adopted Mami later, even while living in a no-pets apartment in San Francisco. Sinead admitted to feeling something special with Mami’s eyes that she could not resist.

Getting to Know About Mami

SiSinead learned about Mami through a picture of the rescued family from her best friend. At that point, she convinced herself to go for the white one if she was a girl cat. Sinead also highlighted that she didn’t even have to talk to her husband before making the decision.

Why are her eyes so sad?

The vet said that her eyes are like that because her skull didn’t grow right when she was a kitten, and that changed her bones which makes her eyes disturb her sometimes.

Mami’s foster mom said that her right eye has been disturbing her since birth and she would take her to the Vet if there is no significant improvement.

Life in Foster Care

Mami was very scared and shy when she first came to Sinead and Riley. She would hide behind the toilet and hiss at them. It was not easy to make her trust them, even though Sinead had experience with feral cats.

It was so difficult for Sinead that she admitted to crying and feeling frustrated. She said that her worst experience was when Mami peed on her to test her. Sinead had dealt with ferals before, but she never had a cat who needed her to prove herself so much.

Mami always kept a distance from us – she would cuddle, but not too long. This did not affect the love her foster parents have for her.

They saw her potential from the beginning. It took her at least 10 days to stop hissing at them each time they came in contact.

Mami’s Brother

Mami’s parents moved home when she turned one and that made her go back a lot. So, they decided to go for her brother Morty.

That helped a lot because he taught her how to be a normal cat. 6 months down the line, Mami seemed to relax and settle in with the family. She has become so sweet and cute and wants to pet all the time as she sleeps.

Getting a new cat for Mami was a big risk, but it worked out well!

Sinead said they had to seek advice from the Vet who gave approval for a little brother before getting one for Mami. This is because they aren’t sure what the outcome would be for Mami.

Living with Morty

Morty joined the family in June 2015. Mami didn’t hiss or scratch or anything! She was just a little afraid of him because he was very active. Morty has become more dominant as he has grown older, and that has exposed Mami to more things and made her try them.

He has become Mami’s role model; she watches what he does, and that it’s safe to do, and then she tries it herself. Morty gets jealous of attention, but that has made Mami more assertive, which has been awesome!

They groom each other every day and play together whenever they are awake. They are both amazing kitties!

A Long Way Coming

Sinead admitted that being Mami’s human has not been an easy one since she still gets startled by everyday things. However, when she looks back, she can see how far she has come. This makes her grateful for the improvement.
